We have just shifted to USA from India few months ago. My husband works in a company here and we are now planning to raise our 2 children here. Can you give me tips for raising children in a new country. I have a 10 year old boy and a 3 year of girl.

You have made a brave decision. As parents we want our children to know their culture and to remember who they are and where they come from. Moving to a western country can make this a difficult task unless we try to pre-empt any difficulties we might come across. First, know who you are. If you know and understand who you are and where you fit in, your children will find it easier to do so. Second, know whats important- prioritise. Remember and accept that they will lose some of their old ways and habilts. This is part of fitting in. Prioritise those you wish them to value and hold on to and then help them find a place for it in their new lives. Thirdly, balance is important in keeping harmony. Remember we need to help them fit in while holding on to who they are. In order for this to happen successfully, both parties, you and your child need to be in agreement over what they do and how they live their lives. Fourthly, be the best parents you can be. Build trust and respect between yourself and your children so that they trust your decisions and respect your values. I wish you good luck in your new home.
