Self Esteem & Shyness

Support Group Summary from our Therapist (What is a support group?)

Updated on Oct 21 2010

Social anxiety is a complex psychological reality born of both a genetic predisposition as well as a childhood environmant that is experienced as both invalidating and unsafe. What starts as childhood shyness evolves into a reluctance to engage with people in a social context. In these scenarios isolation is soothing, and as as the person increasingly finds comfort in cocooning, the resistance to engaging with others is reinforced. Individual and group therapy provides this client population with tools to risk social enagagement in managed ways that maximise positive outcome. Online groups are a safe way for clients to build confidence and 'get their feet wet' in a supportive and managed environment.
