Support Group Summary from our Therapist (What is a support group?)

Updated on Oct 28 2010

Schizophrenia and other serious brain disorders are an extreme challenge not only for the person afflicted, but for the entire family. It helps a great deal to be able to talk with other people who have, or are, going though the same things that you are - to share tips and local resources in coping, and to work together in getting the best possible treatment in your city or area. Both medical research and anecdotal evidence have revealed that a social support network is a vital part of recovery for mental health consumers.

Your community is likely to have numerous support networks to help you in many ways. Local mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals and clinics, psychiatrista, family physicians and mental health workers will share resources with you that are available to support you in your community. Online support is available should you find yourself in a location that does not offer much community support. Remember always that safety comes first and the patient requires professional medical care, mental health care and group support and ongoing diligent monitoring. Online support is only appropriate for stablised patients and their families. Online support DOES NOT in any way take the place of medical and mental health treatment, it is a support modality only to share resource information and provide emotional support to others in similar situations.
